Description :

This expressive pair of original paintings captures the spirited faces of two children from Valdez, Alaska. Executed with a vibrant, painterly touch, these portraits celebrate Indigenous Alaskan heritage through the lens of a prominent regional artist. Hand-painted oil or acrylic on canvas, likely produced in the 1950s or 1960s. Both boy and girl are depicted wearing traditional attire, including parkas with thick ruffs.

This pair of portraits of Alaskan Native children were painted by Harvey B. Goodale (1900–1980), a prominent artist known for capturing the people and landscapes of Alaska.

Each is mounted in a light wood frame and measure 9.5" x 12". The back sticker reads by Harvey B. Goodale (Valdez, Alaska).

Harvey B. was born in Massachusetts, and moved to Alaska in 1943 and lived in the Chugiak area near Anchorage for 37 years. He is celebrated for his portraits of Native Alaskans and scenes of local life, including bush pilots, whale hunters, and landscapes. He was married to Ellen Henne Goodale, another accomplished Alaskan artist who also specialized in Native portraits and dog-team scenes. They became a highly collaborative and prominent artistic couple in the region.

Similar single small portraits of Alaskan children by Goodale or his wife typically range from $300 to $650 each.
